One renewal calendar for your trademark, business name and domain
By Registry Australia · Published
Most small businesses end up with at least three registrations that quietly run out. A business name renews every one or three years. A domain name renews on its own term. A trademark, if you have one, lasts ten years. They are held with different bodies, they are billed at different times, and none of them knows about the others.
That is exactly why one of them gets missed. The usual story is not carelessness. The business name was registered by one person, the domain was set up by a web designer, the trademark was lodged by an attorney, and years later nobody has the full picture.
Build the list once
Start with a single page that lists each registration, who holds it, when it is due and which email address gets the reminder. For most businesses it looks like this:
- Business name: the name itself, the ABN it is registered to, the renewal date, one or three year term.
- Domain names: each domain, the registrant, the expiry date, whether auto renew is on.
- Trademark: the number, the owner, the ten year renewal date from the filing date.
- Hosting and email: the plan, the renewal date and the card used.
Put each date in a calendar with a reminder a few weeks ahead, because a domain or business name that needs paying is far quicker to fix before the date than after it. For a trademark, put the reminder well ahead. The renewal can be filed in a window before the date, so there is no reason to leave it to the last week.
Then check that the owner on each record is the entity that actually runs the business. A trademark held by a founder personally, a domain registered in a developer's name, or a business name still tied to a closed sole trader ABN are all common, and each can make a later renewal harder than it needs to be.
Where we fit
We look after all three renewals. Search your business name in our renewal box, pick one or three years and pay, and the ASIC renewal fee is included. We register and transfer .com.au, .au and .com names, and if your domains are with us you can see them and their renewals together in your Registry dashboard. For a trademark, you search for it on our site, select it and pay, and we handle the renewal with IP Australia. If a letter from us arrives, scan the QR code on it or type in the reference number and pay. Having them with one team means one place to see what is due. If you are not sure, our team can check on 1300 070 000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Melbourne time.
The trademark's renewal date is on the record in the IP Australia trademark search, so you can check it there and add it to the same calendar.
